Active Isolated Stretching (AIS) “The Mattes Method” is a scientifically designed flexibility system that applies specific principals and movements to target specifics areas of the body.

Pioneered by Kinesiologist Aaron L. Mattes, AIS is utilized by doctors, therapists, trainers, and professional athletes improving flexibility, function and overall performance. AIS is a powerful tool in rehabilitation while preventing, maintaining and improving the overall quality of life.

AIS differs from other stretching methods in two primary ways. First, each stretch is held for only two seconds, hence avoiding the stretch reflex arch. Secondly, AIS uses active muscular contraction to the working (agonist) muscle to signal the opposing muscular (antagonist) to relax and stretch, this law of physics is called reciprocal inhibition.

Multiple repetitions of each specific stretch are used to achieve results, along with “pumping” action that forces purifying oxygen into muscle tissue while flushing out toxins including lactic acid. AIS uses full range repetitions for each stretch, and on each movement the tissue is gently pushed beyond the stagnate range.

The client being assisted by a skilled AIS Practitioner is contributing 100% during the sessions. This active participation will help create awareness and re-educate muscles while opening neural pathways.
